- Your support of local artists helps your local economy. According to Americans for the Arts, a non-profit arts advocacy group, the arts and culture industry generates $166.2 billion in economic activity each year . Non-profit arts organizations not only provide full-time and part-time employment for artists, they employ administrative support staff and marketing and fundraising professionals. They also contribute billions to local and state tax revenues and generate economic activity through the real estate, goods and services needed to produce their creative products. Audiences at arts events help support the local economy by patronizing nearby restaurants and paying for parking and childcare.
- Your support of local artists can help stimulate tourism and attract tourist dollars. Tourists not only purchase works of art and local crafts, they also spend money on hotels and restaurants, purchase souvenirs, and make use of local businesses like hair salons and laundromats. A thriving arts scene can also be a big selling point for retirees, people looking for a vacation home and even large corporations seeking business property.
- Your support of local artists provides unique educational opportunities for children in your community. When artists work with local schools, they not only foster children's innate creativity, they help promote literacy and teach valuable problem-solving skills. Involvement in the arts can inspire kids to stay in school, instill a positive work ethic, build self-esteem, promote collaboration and foster an appreciation for cultural differences.
- By helping to support the arts where you live, you'll give your community all the economic and social benefits of a vibrant arts scene. You can help support local artists by attending arts events and purchasing artwork at local galleries. Arts groups usually receive a large portion of their income from government and corporate grants, and from individual donors. Attend an arts fundraiser, and bring your friends. Money you contribute to a non-profit arts groups is usually tax-deductible.
- Even if you can't afford a monetary contribution, you can still support local artists by volunteering for a local arts organization. Because budgets are usually tight, arts organizations depend on volunteers to keep their doors open. Volunteers can help with fundraising, marketing and events. Another way to help is by talking to your friends and neighbors, and writing to elected officials to encourage their continued support for the arts.

Benoît Mandelbrot, Novel Mathematician, Dies at 85
=============
Benoît Mandelbrot
Novel Mathematician, Dies at 85
"For most of his career, Dr. Mandelbrot had a reputation as an outsider to the mathematical establishment. From his perch as a researcher for I.B.M. in New York, where he worked for decades before accepting a position at Yale University, he noticed patterns that other researchers may have overlooked in their own data, then often swooped in to collaborate.
“He knew everybody, with interests going off in every possible direction,” Professor Mumford said. “Every time he gave a talk, it was about something different.”"

could have claimed in 1929
opening Jones Beach State Park
for millions of mothers, fathers, children,
grandmothers, granddads, cousins, aunts, uncles
coming from Freeport, from Farmingdale, from Oyster Bay,
coming from Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx
Art-Deco style cast stone planters and garbage can covers,
raised seam copper roof of Pitch-Putt booth,
ship’s capstan fountain, slate mosaics,
curved steps to beach.
“Today, Jones Beach State Park remains one of the greatest achievements
in twentieth century public works construction.”
What would have been Robert Moses’ expletives gazing upward?

Tots—brothers, sisters, playmates--
little laborers on their knees,
scoop sand with yellow toy shovels,
canals for surf waters to surge into,
filling big holes with tiny lakes
Sanitation workers, truck drivers,
cops, teachers, doctors,
soldiers on leave with their lovers,
arms around each other on seashell-patterned beach blankets.
Treks over sand to boardwalk concessions,
mustard-decorated hotdogs enmeshed in sauerkraut

Fishermen and women
wade surf in high slickers,
cast long lines
for strikes by fierce fighting “blues”
Bird watchers focus binoculars on terns,
origami birds, cut-out sleek wings’, forked tails,
hovering over breakers.

Connecting the Creative People of Long Island
We want you to know that The Artists Group, has another blog that "tries" to connect the creative community of Long Island; Not only for the creatives themselves, but, for the public at large.
Many events could be more successful if others know they are happening. In the effort to help the public be more aware, we are trying ( and I say trying, because it is a daunting task) to have the information out there for all to see by posting events, artists.musicians, poets and other creatives' web sites to the CANDO blog.
We are asking any Long Island based imagineer to help by sending us your info, event listing, or any stuff that you might need an audience for. We all need an audience, that's why we do what we do. We love being creative. We like to share. Artistic people are some of the most generous and loving of all human kind.
We hope you will join the movement and blend our voices together to make our Island the best it can be. We love this Island, we hope you love it, too.
We look forward to new information to add to CANDO.

Why Support Local Artists?
By Daniela Mays,- eHow Contributing Writer -
Artists not only enrich your community with the beauty of their work, they also help to educate children, encourage tourism and keep local economies growing and thriving. But the arts can't survive without support. Wherever you live, there are many ways you can help keep the arts alive.

The goal of holding a Long Island, N.Y. Fringe Festival
The importance of a FRINGE FESTIVAL, as opposed to just "any" festival. Fringe has a 60 year history WORLD WIDE. Sure, we have all been involved in festivals before. The idea of a FRINGE is much different. There is lore involved, that conveys a unity of spirit, accomplishment in the face of adversity & pride of place.
Hoping all the folks here on Long Island "get it", because to have an opportunity, like this, come along & ignore it, would be a mistake.
We believe this will is one of the most important things to come along in a VERY long time. If we ALL join together we can make HISTORY.
Don't let this pass you by......

LONG ISLAND FRINGE FESTIVAL 2010
========================================
Not sure if any of you out there are aware of this but there is only two months.....TWO MONTHS, left to apply for the second Long Island Fringe Festival. The applications have been coming in since the calendar turned over and it looks like this year will be better than the first. Once more Tilles Center will be the host site for this collection of poets, artists, musicians, dancers, thespians and any one else who has something creative to offer. During 2009's Experience Long Island festival, we gathered together performers of every discipline and created an event that was an entertainment extravaganza and a community of entertainers unlike anything the island had ever seen. 2010 is already shaping up with another stellar lineup of performers anticipated. The ticketing for this years festival has been simplified, and in keeping with the economic conditions we all face, ticket prices have been reduced. As an example, a full weekend pass will be available for $90! We hope anyone who has been thinking about performing at Fringe 2010 will hurry up and get that application in now because there are only 2 TWO monthe left to apply for your spot in history.
