The work of artist Laurette Kovary in solo exhibition at Bryant Library in Roslyn, Long Island. The show, featuring room-wrapping contemporary murals and distinctly unique individual images in smaller formats, is highlighted by a multimedia presentation born of a close collaboration with her daughter, poet Noel Kovary, who recited her collection entitled "What My Pillow Only Knows" while mom Laurette's images were projected on her pure white dress.

Folk with a capital "F"

With things so tough out there right now, I find a lot of friends
making life-changing decisions about their work.
I submit to you that this is a great time to take a leap of faith and
dust off that American Dream of yours.

Dreams are important ideas that come from deep inside.
They nudge us, and all too often we shove them aside.

With this in mind, I've started

"Island to Island" - Artists Benefit for Haiti -
Mistretta Galleries 435 Forest Avenue, Locust Valley, New York - 516 671- 6070
February 20th to the 28th 2010
Opening February 20th 2010- 7-10 pm

"When the earthquake struck in Haiti on January 12th 2010 I felt deeply saddened. The Haitian people have had a long history of hardship and this was an event that simply decimated the country. I remembered that in May of 2002, the Museum of Modern Art installed a show called, Life of the City, and Exit Art sponsored Reactions, a global response to 9/11, both of which I participated in, as well as the Museum of the City of New York’s tribute. Various spontaneous artists benefits began to crop up around town for the purpose of helping families and the city after the 9/11 attack on the twin towers.
Union Square, across the street from my old 14th Street studio became flooded with artworks, posters and flowers-- it showed how artists could come together to show unity.

So, a few days after the earthquake, I felt the need to organize an artists benefit here on Long Island. I knew that the artists community was always there to help. I asked Don Mistretta if he would open his gallery for an exhibition of works that would be given to donors in exchange for a donation of $40.00 or more to Doctors Without Borders. I knew that Don held benefits in his gallery before- and that he was both generous and very experienced in these endeavors.

I looked through my work and found the drawing that now appears on the poster- it seemed to fit. The art works would be hung salon style--that is, unframed and clipped to the wall in clothesline fashion. Works flooded in and Don hung the show while Babe, his assistant, a beautiful black lab, kept him company.

I would like to thank Don Mistretta for his kindness in sponsoring and his availability and great effort towards the success of the show, Deb Kasimakis and Bob Goida for helping co-ordinate the exhibition and to all the artists who contributed their work for this benefit, as well as to everyone who had a part in this important event--
Lois Bock DiCosola February 20th, 2010"
